What is TMJ? The masseter or jaw muscle is the strongest muscle in the body used primarily in chewing and grinding food. This muscle can become overactive and result in Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ). Symptoms of TMJ can include teeth grinding, teeth clenching, and jaw pain. How Can Neurotoxins Help? Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are all part of a class of injectable treatments called neurotoxins designed to reduce wrinkles and fine lines on the face and neck and work by relaxing these muscles. A neurotoxin can also be used as an effective treatment for TMJ by relaxing this muscle and providing relief of symptoms. Will I Still Look Natural? A neurotoxin will be used to target specific treatment areas, which means that other muscles that are not treated will still allow you to express yourself naturally. You will still be able to smile, chew and eat foods normally, but with reduced TMJ symptoms. Who is a Good Candidate? If you are between the ages of 18 and 65 and in good health, a neurotoxin treatment can be an effective treatment option for you. What to Expect During Treatment During your consultation, we will discuss your own unique desires and create a custom treatment plan. Pricing varies per treatment. Average cost is $450. Your $50 deposit will be deducted from the total treatment cost. The treatment itself involves a series of carefully selected injections into specific areas of the masseter muscle and typically takes 20 minutes or less. Again, this treatment will allow the muscle to be relaxed, but still able to function. You will then wait a few minutes after your treatment to watch for any side effects to the treatment before resuming your daily activities. How Soon Will I See Results? Most patients see improvement within 7-10 days of treatment, with full results/diminished TMJ symptoms 2 weeks after treatment. Masseter treatments should be repeated every 4-6 months to maintain treatment benefits.
